About Me:
My name is Teresa King, I'm a Political Science major on the Pre-Law track, with minors in Criminal Justice, Social Work, and Honors. This project has helped me to reflect on my roots, specifically my background in being a low-income first-generation student. I was able to more clearly recognize the barriers that I faced to gain entry into this institution such as lack of resources and support, as well as my current fears and doubts that I deal with on campus. This message is really important as it has potential for consoling those experiencing similar obstacles. I know my younger siblings in a few years will be looking at colleges and this could be a comforting resource that while the process won't be easy, in the end hard work pays off and they are not alone in their trials. The same can go for other first gen students, there is a great need to break the stigma of embarrassment regarding our socioeconomic status, level of education within our families, asking for help, and working harder than second and third gen students just in overcoming added obstacles.
